Information Freedom in the Academic Library
LIS-636 - Foundations of Librarianship
Foundations of Librarianship was taken during my first semester of graduate school. This class clarified why libraries do what they do. Why they are the champion of their patrons and fight against discrimination and fight against censorship. Intellectual freedom is one of the core tenants upon which the library stands. Making sure that information is freely available to everyone is important. This paper takes a look at how the idea of intellectual freedom is carried out in the academic setting.

Dissertation Database Comparison
LIS-656 - Online Information Retrieval, Summer 2021
This class was my first attempt at original research. This paper brought several ideas to mind that would make great future studies. The assignment was to compare two similar databases. This study examines and compares three dissertation databases; ProQuest Dissertations & Theses Global (PQDTG), WorldCat Dissertations (WCD), and Open Dissertations (OD) including size, coverage, features, and search results for a specific set of terms. While daunting at the time, this was a great exercise in how to analyze resources for one's library and determine which is best for your patrons.

Research Guide
LIS-501 - Reference
Reference was my most challenging class as it took me out of my comfort zone. Learning how to research questions and assist the patron to the best answer is daunting but satisfying. The research guide linked above was a great exercise in creating a resource that pulls together different media to aid the researcher in their search. The skills learned involve discerning what information to use, the best way to present the information, and to make sure it is age appropriate for the user.

LIS-692 - Marketing and PR
One of the assignments for the Marketing and PR class involved creating a 90 second video to promote a library service. When creating this video, I was able to learn new online software, Animoto, and allowed my imagination to run wild to put together this video on reader's advisory services available to patrons in any library. Looking for images to use was also a learning experience as the copyright and free use clauses needed to be taken into consideration when collecting images to use. This was exciting to create and I was pleased with the outcome.

LIS-557 - Information Technology in Libraries
Information Technologies in Libraries is where we began building our ePortfolios. This was more than just a web class. This course exposed us to use basic software, such as Word and Excel, and hosted software like Canva. The above poster was for an assignment that asked us to create a poster for a library program. This was the first time working in Canva and I really like the outcome. |
LIS-692 - Marketing and PR
The Marketing and PR class had us look at all aspects of promoting a library. From creating memes and buttons, to building videos for social media, and a full marketing campaign. I was able to learn a lot on how to market services and how to make a library known to all patrons: past, present and future. |
LIS-590 - Library Instruction.
Through this course, the importance of making sure instruction, both live and online, was applicable for all learning styles was discussed. We were taught more than just how to create videos or resource guides, we were taught how to create instruction that can meet all learning styles. The video below was an assignment on how to search the online catalog. This video goes one extra step and takes the viewer into the stacks to find the item on the shelves.

I had the privilege of presenting during the Mississippi Library Association conference in October 2021. The abstract below is a good introduction to the presentation.
Having worked at the Mississippi State University Library for 27+ years, I embarked on the journey to earn by MLIS degree at the University of Southern Mississippi. Because of my tenure at the MSU library I am aware of how libraries support their patrons. Due to my studies this past year, I learned why we do what we do. Come listen to insights from an almost librarian on what is being taught to future librarians.
